  • Not so politically correct today.

This version cleverley is told in Victorian/Edwardian times. But still in the same location. I enjoyed it but felt it illustrated more the prejudices all had for Jews more than equal fairness. I felt that all the bad people won at the end rather than justice had been seen to be done. Why ? Wastrel fop borrows money off a man he clearly despises using his old friend as a security to charm a woman who acts more like a prostitute - looking for a suitor in a mercenary way! Anyway not only does everyone despise and insult the Jew who doesn’t court their custom but also one of their spoilt friends woos his daughter to run off with them. So they take his money, insult his faith, his person and take his treasured daughter from him and he is supposed to be the bad guy? It’s human nature to seek revenge and when the fop deals don’t go through the Jew wants the contract fulfilled (as gruesome as it may be). Well as you can imagine the rich spoilt Gentiles get the upper hand and walk away not having to pay the old man a cent. Leaving him devastated and them ending up just like ‘The importance of being Earnest’ walking off with a girl on each of their arms smug as ever. I felt really sorry for Shylock. This Shakespeare story says more about how you can do anything nasty to people you don’t like and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Millions of quotes today are used from this play so watch it and count them up!

  • A Shakespeare Movie Never Looks This Good

I love this DVD so much! Seeing Sir Laurence Olivier, Jeremy Brett, Joan Plowright and Michael Jayston all in one screen in one of my favorite Shakespeare tales? Oh joy! Brilliant actors with great acting, no doubt. Truly memorable and unforgettable. Not too mention the fact that the young Mr. Jeremy Brett is incredibly handsome with mustache as Bassanio. 😍🥰♥️💖

  • Merchant of Venice

Olivier is at his peak in this production of the Merchant of Venice. A really worthwhile addition to my collection of Shakespeare on DVD.
