About this product

Product Information

Shot entirely on location in the Middle East, Peter Kosminsky's (WHITE OLEANDER, BRITZ) epic drama serial THE PROMISE tells the story of 18-year-old Londoner Erin (Claire Foy, LITTLE DORRIT) and her efforts to fulfil a promise made by her grandfather over 60 years ago. When Erin spends her summer in Israel with friend Eliza (Perdita Weeks, LOST IN AUSTEN), she decides to use the opportunity to explore her ailing grandfather's past in post-WWII Palestine. Len's (Christian Cooke, CEMETERY JUNCTION) experiences in the British peace-keeping force -as shown in stunning flashback- take Erin on a heart-breaking journey through modern-day Israel.

Original view submitted in response to Ebay email but lost after I was required to log into Ebay!!!! Peter Kosminsky is the successful Director of "The Promise" and also the more recent "Wolf Hall" We are of the generation that lived through "The Holocaust" and the gas chambers and concentration camps of Nazi Europe in World War II. We have given rather unconditional support to Jewish people and their new homeland and a "never again" approach to genocide. A younger member of our family, who is a Jeremy Corbyn supporter, was more concerned about the persecution of Palestinian people by Israel "The Promise aroused great controversy when its four 100-minute episodes were aired on Channel 4 in February 2011. It wove together the history of British involvement in the founding of Israel in 1947-48, seen through the eyes of a young British soldier, with the present day reality in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, witnessed by his teenage granddaughter. A Heartfelt Wish shows Kosminsky explaining his film to A-level students from four Sherborne secondary schools and records their interactions with him and with Dr Graham Kings, Bishop of Sherborne, who chaired the proceedings, Rabbi Danny Rich, Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism, and Dr Hammadi Nait-Charif, Senior Lecturer in Computer Animation, Bournemouth University, among others. The result is a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of complex issues, presented in an accessible form. A Heartfelt Wish by Jon Pullman 22 mins" Unfortunately Jews for Justice for Palestinians should be ashamed for accepting my bank transfer but not supplying three copies of this follow up DVD or follow up of web-mail communcations.

  • Great series.

One of the best short series ever made by channel 4. Impossible to buy new anymore. So good I've bought copies for friends. Characters are really engaging. Though the characters are fictional the main events are true and shows how the nation of Israel was formed. The good and bad.

I saw this series when it was first broadcast on Channel 4 and I always promised myself that I would watch it again. It doesn’t appear to be available on any streaming or download platform. A great topic and interesting DVD to watch.
