The tender but tragic story of a man embroiled in past betrayals, Shoot the Piano Player is Francois Truffaut's gripping salute to the American noir gangster film. Charlie Kohler (Charles Aznavour, in one of his finest roles), a once-renowned concert pianist, is a forlorn figure playing background music in a run-down bar, a man who cannot forgive, nor forget, his former wife's infidelity. Having rejected the love of the bar's waitress, his tragedy becomes more sinister and violent when his brother, a small-time crook, pays him a visit with two vengeful gangsters in tow. Taut, dark and pervaded by fear and paranoia, Truffaut tempers the classic noir feel with black comedy, slapstick and romantic melodrama, making Shoot the Piano Player one of the most innovative films of the French New Wave.
