  • Lumix FS3 - CAN deliver good pictures if you recognise its limitations.

This is about as basic a useful camera as you can get for today - being a typical 2008 era digicam. Before that, digicam sensors were very low resolution, and cameras saved images to strange and obsolete memory cards. The Lumix FS3 uses SD cards, has a very small and slow sensor - that creates noise and blurring in the images so that the quality starts to dive by 400asa. The lens gives a limited zoom range of 33-100mm equivalent. It is a CCD sensor design - so downloading is slow, action shots are very difficult to take and burst speeds (shot to shot interval time) is slow - further compounded by the slow autofocus. Lastly, the video very low spec'. CCD sensors also use way more power so battery life is short - carry a spare battery or two if you are on holiday and don't want to miss a shot. About 4-5 years after this camera was sold, camera designs were transformed by the srrival of fast CMOS sensors and suddenly they worked faster, shot reasonable video, had way longer battery life and deliver a lot more "functionality". So in short - your phone probably trumps it on all levels now in 2022. But - for postcard sized prints or for showing on a laptop screen, it takes pictures as good today as it did when first sold in 2008 - and it delivers good flash exposures if you set it to the "Party" scene mode. But, within those limits, the pictures are good, sharp, colourful and bright. As a starter camera for a child or as a "disposable" camera to take into rough places, and at a low selling price, it still has its uses. Used within these limits for traditional "slow" photography, locked to 100 or 200asa and in good light or on a tripod, and used without cropping the picture for 6x4 or 7x5 prints or for screen viewing , this camera CAN deliver great images. You can increase the contrast in-camera by shooting on the "Landscape" scene mode and reduce it by setting "portrait", but other than locking it to a low asa setting, other controls over image quality are non-existant. Within that role (and for some, it is all they need!) its tiny size means it is still a carry anywhere and useful device.....that is why I bought mine in 2022. But realistically, for a little bit more investment, most photographers should probably scout eBay for later and higher spec' models with better zooms and faster sensors unless they have the patience to follow the "work-arounds" needed to get good images. But --- follow all those steps and it can deliver really great images!
