Camera Works Well as Point-and-Shoot or Much More

This camera has a lot of hidden features: he instruction book in English for Canon PowerShot G9 is 275 pages long! If that is not daunting in itself, the big-handed person will have to struggle a little with the small buttons. On the positive side, there is the point-and-shoot mode: just hold the camera steady while looking at the subject in the bright 3" diagonal screen and press the shutter button. About 90% of the time, the resulting picture is most satisfactory. Perusing the instruction book is worth a bit of time. Spending time fiddling with the options wheel on the top of the camera will tell you a lot as well. Settings to overcome the brown/yellow cast of incandescent light, or to use a wide-open shutter for night photos are just two functions worth learning if the picture you want is more than a bit challenging. This camera is intended for the casual photographer, who occasionally needs something a bit out of the usual for the picture being sought.

    slow shooting

A nice camera but it takes a few beats to renew between shots. If you want to take a series of quick photos you may have trouble with the speed of recovery. The adjustable lense is good as is the overall compact size.

  • A well made compact camera

Everything a budding photographer need without the bulk of an SLR Camra. It shoots in Jpg and also the professional format, RAW. Easy to carry around and so easy to use. It has many features that will amaze you. The quality of the lens is amazing, good sharp images. A type of camera that is easy to carry around, so you will never miss a opportunity to catch that one in a lifetime photo.

  • Favorite Canon is their G9

Little G9 camera does a terrific job of quality photos for both close ups and landscapes. Its size and weight make it a daily companion in in my purse and enables me to no miss any of those KODAK moments. Even has decent video capabilities. I take 1000's of photos a year. Its pricing makes replacement more feasible than investing in repairs/a newer model.

  • Canon G9 - a lot of camera in a small package

I bought the Canon G9 to improve upon the low light performance of my Canon A-710IS. Although the A-710IS has more than enough resolution (7MP) and optical zoom (6X), and its Macro focus and Image Stabilization are more than adequate for product photos to be viewed on computer monitors, I often shoot at night under artificial light, without flash, of course. I can now lock ISO at 400 and get the exposure I need at f2.8 to f4. The G9's IS provides sharp images at handheld shutter speeds of 1/15 to 1/30 second with acceptable noise and great Auto White Balance. It is a serious camera, providing Canon-dedicated hot shoe, optical viewfinder AND 3" LCD viewing, RAW file capture, and lots of exposure mode control. The optical zoom is 6X with f2.8-4.8 lens. I find the 5MP setting to be more than adequate for ebay product photos, even though it can do 12MP. And, I bought it on ebay!

  • I'm a happy guy

The Canon Powershot G9 feature-wise is one of the two best G series Canon has made. a 6x zoom, has time lapse, HD video. . . the only missing feature for me is a articulating screen. Photo quality for this small sensor camera is VERY GOOD, few small sensor camera match its quality. . . even now. Canon's menu layout is quite good and is 'common' sense and easy to understand and learn. More technical info can be found at DPReview:

  • Still a solid choice

These are great cameras. They still outperform many of the similar cameras in its class. With features for both a novice and a serious pro, this camera can deliver stunning photos. This used to be the best in it's class, and still rankes up there in my opinion.

  • Great little camera that delivers BIG!

I own a G16, but bought this G9 as a backup camera. Used it for the first time last weekend, and was SO pleased with the results! Color is true, image quality wonderful, and the zoom is EXCELLENT. It's not a camera that will fit in your shirt pocket, but if you want something between a BIG camera and a little point-and-shoot, THIS IS IT!

  • My favorite camera

I currently have 3 of these and have had 6 or 7 total. I was looking for a good all round camera that I could also use for my eBay listings and a photographer friend suggested the G9. Great image quality and very easy to use. They are hard to kill despite heavy handling in a harsh environment, oil, dirt and humidity. I will be very sad when there are none left on the used market - hence the 2 spares.

  • Great quality -- pocket sized

I have been searching for replacement for my S95, and have used Canon S100 and Sony DSC RX-100. I travel alot and have abandoned my big bag of SLR equipment in favor of a high quality pocket camera (the best camera is the one you have with you . . .) The Sony's image quality is superb (probably owing to the sensor size . . .) but it was just enough larger than the S95 to make it a bit difficult slide it in and out of my pocket. The G9X has solved this problem. Sensor size has increased, and as far as I can tell with the limited time I have used it, the image quality is on par with the Sony.
