Harry Fervesham is a soldier in the British troops, son of an army general and engaged to the beautiful Ethne. In 1885 his battalion was sent to Africa to liberate the city of Khartoum from the Sudanese siege. Harry, tormented by doubts, refuses to leave and resigns from the army.
