  • Does it all.

The camera I bought on ebay was in 'as new' condition. It is packed with features such as Time Base Correction, Digital Noise Reduction, 20X optical zoom, steadyshot image stabilization and Nightshot Plus for filming in total darkness with built in infra red light to recreate those 'Most Haunted' moments. It has many connectivity options including Dv-in/out, AV-in/out and USB. It is compatible with the Digital8, Hi8, video8 and MemoryStick formats. As it plays back analogue tapes and has a digital output, it is great for transferring old analogue 8mm tapes to computer via the firewire socket. Some models only plays Digital8 recordings made with a Digital8 camcorder, not analogue recordings made with Hi8 and video8 camcorders. They will, of course, play Digital8 recordings made on a blank Hi8 or video8 tape. Only some models will playback Digital8 and analogue Hi8 and video8. There's a list on the 'Digital8' page of Wikipedia. "The models of Sony Digital8 camcorder that are capable of both digital and analog playback include these models: DCR-TRV103 DCR-TRV110 (playback of Hi8 and video8 in SP/LP but record and playback of Digital8 in SP only) DCR-TRV120 DCR-TRV230 DCR-TRV238 DCR-TRV240 DCR-TRV310 DCR-TRV330 DCR-TRV340 DCR-TRV350 DCR-TRV480 DCR-TRV520 DCR-TRV720 DCR-TRV740 DCR-TRV830 DCR-TRV840 " Just add the 'E' for the U.K. PAL versions (e.g. DCR-TRV240, U.S. version is equivalent to DCR-TRV240E, U.K. version). They all have firewire connections. This is not a complete list as there are some others such as DCR-TR8000E (camcorder with eye-viewfinder only, no fold-out screen) They sell for more than the ones that don't playback analogue tapes. However, if you can find one of the models listed, with a faulty image sensor (there are a lot around) on ebay, then it could be fine for playing back tapes and could be as cheap as £60.

  • Excellent if you have some old Video8 or Hi8 you need to digitize.

I had a bunch of Video8 home video tapes from the 80's, some with fairly bad noise as well. I wanted to have digital copies ASAP, but I didn't want to ship my tapes to a company - way to risky with this material, it is irreplaceable! I bought this camcorder because it was the last model Sony produced of their Digital8 cams. It has a built in TBC which completely removed all my noise and issues on the tapes. I've also always had problems with the mono audio on my good old Sanyo Video8 camcorder, where you had to have 100% volume on the TV to hear what people said. This camcorder took care of everything, together with the Mac App "LifeFlix" I could easily connect through Firewire on my MacBook Pro (2011) and control my camera from there. I stored WITHOUT any compression, as I wanted RAW DV files, which worked perfectly. It rewinded and started playing the tapes. The camcorder automatically switches to Video8/Hi8 mode and plays with excellent audio. It is now "dual mono" so I can have audio in both speakers, and the audio volume is SO much better than with the old analog Sanyo camcorder I had. If you need to digitize your Video8/Hi8, USE one of these cameras, it's well worth the money. Cheap analog USB-recorders are NOT going to give a good result. I tried with Sanyo - Elgato Video Capture, but the quality was horrible! This camera is great for preserving your old memories!
