Product Information

A complete survey of 100 years of military history, for better or for worse This unique and penetrating book surveys 100 years of military inefficiency from the Crimean War, through the Boer conflict, to the disasterous campaigns of the First World War and the calamities of the Second. It examines the social psychology of military organizations, provides case studies of individual commanders and identifies an alarming pattern in the causes of military disaster. Absorbing and original, this is the definitive history of military failures.

  • Class War: How the Thickos got the Cake

So many appalling accounts of dire leadership, so often by men who are hidebound, fragile, egocentric, whose imaginations and knowledge are never deployed except for self preservation - well, always they try, but to be fair they themselves often die in the ditch: I have no sympathy. The way they so often let their men, in their thousands and tens of thousands, suffer and die so needlessly... This is the English upper class at its catastrophic best. Not so many in the Army now - look for them in the Conservative Party. A great and entertaining read.
