About this product

Product Information

The half million selling classic novel of the Glasgow slum underworld. No book is more associated with the city of Glasgow than No Mean City. First published in 1935, it is the story of Johnnie Stark, son of a violent father and a downtrodden mother, the 'Razor King' of Glasgow's pre-war slum underworld, the Gorbals. The savage, near-truth descriptions, the raw character portrayals, bring to life a story that is fascinating, authentic and convincing.

      No Mean City

Bought y my mum. She read t years ago and has never forgotten it. She wanted to read it again. She would have preferred it on kindle so she could expand the text. Also she sai sometimes it seems like there is a lot of local words used but that you can usually understand their meaning from the context. From what she has told me it sounds interesting and would possibly make a good film. I thinkI will read when she has finished it. A good portrayal of a time and era from what I understand.

    • Reminds me of the Good Old Times!!!

I read this book a long time ago and thought it worth an other read, as I was born in the Gorbals at the end of the war in Thistle Street. Near Calidonia Road. It is interesting and does remind me of the slums we lived in.
