About this product
Product Information
Classic text describes many afflictions said to result from being stared at - as observed from the days of the ancient Egyptians up to the late 19th century. Descriptions of gestures, charms, incantations, and other protective acts used to ward off power of the evil eye. In Italian, it's referred to as malocchio. In Spanish, it's el ojo. And in Farsi, it's bla band. In many cultures, primitive or sophisticated, the evil eye is considered to be a gaze that can harm or bewitch. This classic text on the subject, first published more than a century ago, recounts the many afflictions said to result from that stare, from the days of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, up to the late nineteenth century. A classic in its field, Frederick Elworthy's thorough study of an age-old notion focuses on superstition and folklore surrounding the use of gestures, amulets, incantations, and other protective behavior used to ward off the power of the evil eye. Enhanced with nearly 200 illustrations of evil-preventing charms from the author's personal collection, this in-depth study will appeal to students and scholars of folklore and to anyone enticed by tales of the supernatural.

- a***x (241)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseAs usual, this seller is completely trustworthy: the book was as described, terrific value, arrived very swiftly from America, well packaged and safe. It was an old library book, but in great condition and appearance, and there can be no criticism, simply thanks and praise for a job well done.
- a***i (1397)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseAn excellent book lot of valuable information regarding all aspects of sewing. A very rare find as bought from the USA. Which was dispatched and and delivered quickly. Excellent communication throughout the transaction. This book was in very good condition as described and well packaged. Happy to highly recommend this seller with reasonable postage from USA. Many thanks.
- c***r (524)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseBook as specified, rapid delivery (from USA to UK), and a reasonable price for an out-of-print book. Many thanks for that. Overall, my book arrived in "reasonable quality" packaging. A padded "book mailer" envelope was used. Inside, the book was wrapped in brown paper, to further protect it. One small constructive point of constructive feedback: perhaps cardboard packaging could have been implemented, as a number of competing book sellers are now implementing cardboard packaging.
