    • Thorough, but academic treatment

Full of old favourites, with variations. Doesn't go very far into the underlying meanings/ historical context of particular rhymes in the way, e.g. Albert Jack's 'Pop Goes the Weasel' does. Most historical speculation here is about when a particular rhyme 1st appeared. Despite occasional mentions of the authors' own childhood & family experiences with rhyme, the tone is a little formal & old-fashioned, revealing its academic origins. Nevertheless, it's impressive as a reference work. One beef: @ least in the edition I bought, some of the print is very small.

    • Interesting book

This book isn't what I expected it to be when I purchased it however, its really interesting to know the history / origins of well known (and lesser known) nursery rhymes & songs. The only down side is that it can sometimes be difficult to find what you're looking for.
