This is a love story that occurred during the Vietnam War. An American doctor falls in love with a poor Vietnamese girl from the countryside. The U.S. army is against the idea of a marriage between an American serviceman and a Vietnamese national, attempting to prevent this union by transferring the doctor many miles away to a different base. The Vietnamese bureaucracy requires bribes in order to complete any of the necessary paperwork. And, to complicate matters further, the doctor and girl do not even speak the other's language In spite of all these obstacles, they somehow persevere and are able to leave for the United States when the doctor's tour of duty ends in Vietnam. Now, with that challenge met, she needs to overcome prejudice in America, learn the language and try to make it in a culture totally foreign to her. Can an American Jewish doctor and Vietnamese Catholic, peasant girl whose family has only known extreme poverty all their lives, find happiness together despite misgivings from, even, his own family?
