Synopsis
From wood block to digital fonts, Font: The Sourcebook draws on the rich history of typefaces to produce a uniquely comprehensive survey of this fascinating field, beginning with its history and foundry and carrying through to the most cutting edge and digital fonts being designed today. With essays and interviews from esteemed typographers, graphic designers and artists, Font: The Sourcebook explores font as information, fine art, identity and historical marker, all the while charting the evolution of the typeface with pioneering fonts that have marked its history, such as Garamond, Gill Sans, Helvetica, Univers, Meta and Unit. Looking at both the iconic and the more arcane areas where fonts come into play, the book goes on to profile some of the most innovative and important historical and contemporary typefaces currently in use, making Font: The Sourcebook a resource no designer, typographer, artist or aesthete will want to be without. 500 colour & b/w illustrations, "Font: The Sourcebook" is a resource for those interested in the story of type and with that visual communication. The first section of "Font: The Sourcebook" gives a thorough history of the public word, back to its roots in Egyptian hieroglyphs, describing the mechanics of early printing right up until the digital methods now in use. This comprehensive account includes comment and analysis by some of the world's leading typographers, graphic designers and critics. Contributors include Penguin's David Pearson, Chairman of the Type Directors Club Alex W White, Will Hill, Pentagram's Domenic Lippa, Ed Fella, Peter Bi'lak, Experimental Jetset and more. The second part of "Font: The Sourcebook" profiles 50 of the most innovative and inspiring fonts in use today, with a short history of their origin, their inspiration and the designer who brought them to life. Each typeface entry is illustrated with an extensive library and examples of the font in use. "Font: The Sourcebook" is a resource no designer, typographer, artist or aesthete will want to be without.

The book arrived quickly and in good condition. It was sealed in plastic and packaged well. The seller took a while to get back to me when I first messaged them, but did ultimately reply. I would buy from this seller again.

Overall, my experience was positive. This book was listed as New condition in shrink wrap. The book was most certainly not new - there was a sticker residue on the inside and some pages were stained. The shrink wrap was not placed on it by the publishers. Someone wrapped it in saran wrap later. The book was generally in fine condition and the packaging was sufficient - mailer with cardboard supports. Not sure why listing offers best offer choice if best offer is 1 dollar less than full price.
