From the beginnings of the steam age to the golden age of train travel at the start of the 20th century the railways have always played an important part in British social history. The records include information on the estimated half a million people employed by over 200 separate rail companies at the start of the last century and provide an important source of material for genealogists, economic historians and railway enthusiasts alike.
