Reviews
8 - Excellent - "...they still provide the best soundtrack for sex....", Recommended - "...CAFE is a stripped-down, more straightforwardly melodic version of the Cocteau Twins trademark hum-and-strum...", Ranked #46 in New Musical Express' list of `The Top 50 LPs Of 1993' - "...It's the Cocteaus doing what only the Cocteaus can do and doing it very well...", "...By no means a breakthrough record, FOUR-CALENDAR CAFE is a new direction and a nice addition to the Twins' already expansive career....", "...FOUR CALENDAR CAFE consists of romantic rhapsodies and shimmering glissandos played on celestial harps....But here's the real surprise: For the first time ever, you can hear what Elizabeth Fraser's on about...", "...FOUR-CALENDAR CAFE finds the Cocteau's wallowing in one of rock's cheapest and best pleasures: big hooks....the Cocteau Twins' old-fashioned popcraft opens the gates of the world a bit wider without compromising their signature atmospherics....", 4 Stars - "...there is nothing self-indulgent or evasive about FOUR CALENDAR CAFE...Elizabeth Fraser's vocals dominate every tune and her lyrics no longer sound like someone thinking aloud in a private language..."

  • Beautiful.

A beautiful album. It takes guts to put your innermost feelings out there and this is one of Elizabeth Fraser's most powerful moments. Brave and vulnerable lyrics reflecting some of what she was going through at the time, surrounded by wonderful and timeless music. It was a bit overlooked at the time by the British music papers, as they signed to a major record company after years on 4AD. A fantastic record - highly recommended.

  • The Cocteau's first album for Fontana af...

The Cocteau's first album for Fontana after years with 4AD is a piece of muted magic, and surprisingly positive given the turmoil surrounding its creation and occasionally dark subject matter. The arrangements are generally light and some even have a New Age feel, while Liz Frazer's vocals are gorgeous as always - standout tracks are the singles 'Know Who You Are At Every Age' and 'Bluebeard', plus the sublime 'Oil of Angels'. Essential listening.

  • Still sounds great in 2021

I came across this purchase whilst playing Cocteau Twins music online. It's a brilliant CD from beginning to end and still sounds good today - considering it was initially released in 1993!
