About this product

Product Information

Rory Stewart's moving, sparsely poetic account of his walk across Afghanistan in January 2002 has been immediately hailed as a classic. Caught between hostile nations, warring factions and competing ideologies, at the time, Afghanistan was in turmoil following the US invasion. Travelling entirely on foot and following the inaccessible, mountainous route once taken by the Mohgul Emperor, Babur the Great, Stewart was nearly defeated by the extreme, hostile conditions. Only due to the help of an unexpected companion and the generosity of the people he met on the way, did he survive to report back with unique insight on a region closed to the world by twenty-four years of war. 'This is traveling at its hardest and travel-writing at its best' - David Gilmour 'an astonishing achievement: a unique journey of great courage' - Colin Thubron 'wise, funny and marvelously humane' - Michael Ignatieff '[this] evocative book feels like a long lost relic of the great age of exploration' - Guardian 'His encounters with Afghans are tragic, touching and terrifying.' - Daily Telegraph

      A Truly Picaresque Book

This is a fascinating account of Rory Stewart's retracing the route of the Emperor Babur, conqueror of India. It took him across central Afghanistan. A gallery of portraits of fascinating rogues and vagabonds; mainly Muslim. He also visited the Bamiyan former Buddhist site. I admit to getting a bit tired of descrpitions of bloody-minded officials, squalor and lack of washing facilities. I admire the author for putting up with so much hardship and discomfort. A truly picaresque account. (Picaresque probably derives from the old Spanish word 'picarro' - a rogue or vagabond - it has come to mean travelling rough and books about travelling rough.)

    • This is an amazing book.

Lucid writing, moving at times but nothing over-dramatised. His companionship with the dog he names Babur is never sentimental but it is profound. Rory Stewart is knowledgeable about Afghanistan, its languages and people and his walk shows courage and stamina as well curiosity about the history of the country and the wider area. There’s little to cheer him on his way with few physical comforts and the misery of diarrhoea some of the way. He’s very realistic and modest but has a quiet dignity and strength. I can’t put the book down.

    • A travelogue for the inquiring mind.

Rory has a great style, relaxed yet informative. Walking through Afghanistan alone is not for the feint hearted. He pulls it off by being an engaging human being, observing and recording what the reader would probably never see. Highly recommended.

    • Very Good

At first seems like a normal travel book. But you soon realise that Rory is very articulate and humorous. wonderful descriptions of people and places. So sad he was not elected as UK PM. The difference between this writing and Bumpkin Boris is palpable. Unlike the picture my copy has extra writing in the arch "Illustrated and new afterword"
