    Synopsis
The timeless classic presented in the standard hardcover edition using the author's original jacket design. J.R.R. Tolkien's own description for the original edition: "If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can take an interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a little courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler. The period is the ancient time between the age of Faerie and the dominion of men, when the famous forest of Mirkwood was still standing, and the mountains were full of danger. In following the path of this humble adventurer, you will learn by the way (as he did) -- if you do not already know all about these things -- much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and get some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected but important period. For Mr. Bilbo Baggins visited various notable persons; conversed with the dragon, Smaug the Magnificent; and was present, rather unwillingly, at the Battle of the Five Armies. This is all the more remarkable, since he was a hobbit. Hobbits have hitherto been passed over in history and legend, perhaps because they as a rule preferred comfort to excitement. But this account, based on his personal memoirs, of the one exciting year in the otherwise quiet life of Mr. Baggins will give you a fair idea of the estimable people now (it is said) becoming rather rare. They do not like noise.", In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language. Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels. Presented here in the standard hardcover edition using the author's original jacket design. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum. Written for Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic., "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." A classic

This edition has the original cover design and line drawings by the Author. It does not contain the color illustrations. If you want an authentic Hobbit as intended by Tolkein, you want tnis edition, or the larger edition with the green cover which also contains his color illustrations.

      • The Hobbit

It had been 50+ years since I first read Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and love every physical aspect of this book which appears newly printed. I don’t find a print date, only list of copyrights from original in 1937. The dust cover in vivid green, blue & white is appealing. I particularly appreciate Tolkien’s original maps in front & back of book along several draws throughout the book. But it is the STORY which sweeps me along. This is a book to take a place of honor on my bookshelves, as I cannot afford one from the original 1937 printing

      • Great Literature. Great Book

This is a replacement for a copy I've had since I was in high school that my adult daughter wanted. I don't even know how many times I've read this. It is an annual event.
