This book first looks at what is meant by motivation, the kinds of motivation that occur and its neurological basis. It then goes on to examine addiction and its relevance to understanding the biological and psychological basis of motivation and vice versa. Some of the areas covered by research into emotions are highlighted. It considers the universality, features and function of emotions, the brain structures and pathways involved, and the different kinds of emotional disorders that can occur. It then deals with schizophrenia, one of the most serious, widespread, and disabling mental disorders. It explores the question of how much understanding can be obtained about brain function by examining the brain and behaviour of people whose thoughts and feelings are affected by serious mental illness. 'Consciousness revisited' briefly revisits the issue of human consciousness and self-awareness in the light of what has been covered in previous chapters, particularly those in Book 6 .
