El ductus arterioso persistente es una cardiopatia congenita frecuente, se estima que la tasa de mortalidad en infantes con ductus aislado y no tratado pueden llegar a 30%, una de las causas de muerte es la insuficiencia cardiaca, y las infecciones respiratorias. Su tratamiento definitivo ha evolucionado en los ultimos anos, clasicamente el cierre quirurgico era el de eleccion; sin embargo en la actualidad el cierre percutaneo es una importante alternativa, con algunas ventajas en la evolucion inmediata y tardia. Se describen los resultados de ambos tratamientos, a nivel de un importante centro pediatrico de referencia nacional, comparando evolucion clinica, estancia hospitalaria, complicaciones y costos relacionados a cada tipo de intervencion. El presente trabajo esta orientado a cardiologos, pediatras y medicos generales, a fin de conocer las bases teoricas de esta cardiopatia congenita, asi como los principales criterios de seleccion para cada tecnica y elegir la mas racional y conveniente para el paciente.
