About this product

Product Information

New York, a small town on the tip of Manhattan Island, 1746. One rainy evening, a charming and handsome young stranger fresh off the boat from England pitches up to a counting house on Golden Hill Street, with a suspicious yet compelling proposition -- he has an order for a thousand pounds in his pocket that he wishes to cash. But can he be trusted? This is New York in its infancy, a place where a young man with a fast tongue can invent himself afresh, fall in love, and find a world of trouble . . .

      Not my cup of tea!

Got to page 8 then gave up, weeks later managed to get to page 19 then really did give up. Could not see the point in the original language, phrases or descriptions used by the author. This completely ruined the book for me. Mixed thoughts from the rest of our book club, most struggled but some loved it, I did not.

    • Interesting, well researched

An excellent historical novel, even if the author sometimes writes the longest sentences since Virginia Woolf.

    • A hard read

Only on the 1st few pages of this book and hard to tell if it's my cup of tea. Written in old fashioned script which at times is a bit laborious to read. Time will tell. Bought this as it had great reviews and N.Y. being of particular interest to me. Ask again in 3 months time as by then I would have either read it all or passed it on.

    • An engrossing read, full of surprises, not quite like any other.

A highly inventive tale, written in an invigorating style.
