Synopsis
This first book of The Strathnaver Trilogy brings into focus and describes in detail the tragic fate of the Mackay country, Duthaic 'Ic Aoidh, in the far north-west of Scotland. The people underwent a transformation from a traditional, tightly-knit Gaelic-speaking community to a downtrodden helot population to be cleared away at the will of the landowner and replaced by sheep. Dr Grimble describes the deep historical background up to the 18th century.
