Enjoyable insight into a strange hobby

The author really knows her stuff on the history of the Thames and provides some great insights into the often strange objects she finds. You get a good sense of the physical environment and changing moods of the river. The final section on the estuary end of the river is pretty disgusting on the impacts of pollution and terrible waste disposal practices. Didn't persuade me to take it up as a hobby!

  • Engaging read

The author writes in an engaging manner. You can really imagine the scene as she trawls the shores of the Thames at low tide. Not only do you feel the excitement of mudlarking but there are plenty of historical facts thrown in too. A very entertaining read.

  • Informative and entertaining

Lara Maiklem writes with passion and authority about the history she unearths as she pursues her fascinating hobby. She follows up with untiring detective work in order to bring to light the stories surrounding the objects she finds, Her approach is methodical and entertaining as she makes her progress along the tidal reaches of the Thames
