Mon intention, crit-elle, est de n'employer aucune r ticence, pas plus vis - vis de moi-m me que vis- -vis des autres les turpitudes de ses ma tres seront donc f rocement montr es. D'abord con u comme une tude de la condition domestique et une satire des moeurs bourgeoises, Le Journal d'une femme de chambre que Mirbeau fait para tre en 1900 s'est largi en une d nonciation de l'intol rance qui a conduit la condamnation de Dreyfus, et la satire bascule du c t de la diatribe. Au moment de sa parution, l'emportement impudique qui traverse le roman scandalise la critique, qui en d nonce les ignominies et n'en rend compte qu' regret. Mais aujourd'hui, nous pouvons regarder sans moralisme la fureur d vastatrice du livre et son esth tique du monstrueux, et y voir la preuve, bien plut t, de l' clatante puissance litt raire de Mirbeau.Collection Classiques dirig e par Michel Zink et Michel Jarrety. dition pr sent e et annot e par Pierre Glaudes.
