La obesidad se considera una pandemia, contra la cual no hay todavia un efectivo tratamiento farmacologico. Esta enfermedad es caracterizada fundamentalmente por la acumulacion de trigliceridos en el tejido adiposo, resultando en adipocitos de mayor tamano y respuesta inflamatoria. En esta publicacion se evalua el metabolismo oxidativo y la senalizacion para la produccion de trigliceridos utilizando un modelo de laboratorio de celulas adiposas. Se observa que durante la obesidad se induciria estres oxidativo de forma sistemica; mas aun, se considera que las especies oxidantes que se acumulan en la grasa podrian estar relacionadas con el desarrollo del sindrome metabolico. Asi, resulta importante evaluar el posible efecto de antioxidantes como la N-Acetilcisteina sobre el desarrollo de los adipocitos y la acumulacion de grasa en ellos. N-Acetilcisteina, tambien conocida como NAC, esta presente en diferentes alimentos como son: cebolla, ajo, pimientos rojos, nueces y soja. NAC inhibiria la acumulacion de trigliceridos y evitaria cascada de senales para la produccion de lipidos en los adipocitos.
