After removing rust build-up, I pushed them 2/3rds on and then tapped fully home with a hammer. They're certainly not "soft" as listed though - they are hard plastic with no give at all - but that doesn't matter to me.

Tip - grind off the rust to smooth bare steel, apply shaving gel. Working quickly, firmly tap on the grips newly taken out of hot wate. A very posh builder's barrow. The 2nd set of grips fitted a standard, lightweight DIY-store barrow without tapping or shaving gel. They have contracted to grip the barrow handles firmly. Feel-good factor bonus from supporting a specialist small firm.
