Readers follow a litter of wolf pups as they mature. Growth is often measured in milestones; the pups initially rely on mother's milk, then graduate to eating regurgitated meat. By the end, the wolves are hunting alone for small animals. The function of wolf packs is discussed, including how adult wolves other than the pups' parents often help care for the young. Communication (the pups howl when separated from the pack) and physical development are also addressed. Made in conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History, the book contains large, gorgeous photographs that pair well with the text (e.g., a picture of nursing pups accompanies information about their reliance on mother's milk). The narrative is clear and easy to read, and there aren't any overly advanced vocabulary words or higher level concepts to stumble over. The only background knowledge required is an understanding that wolves are predators that need to hunt prey. Text is neatly laid out on pastel-colored boxes.
