Usually situated in the rough part of town, the grindhouses were American cinemas devoted to catering for the more extreme taste, projecting biker flicks, revenge thrillers, martial arts movies and blood-soaked gore epics, to patrons sat wide-eyed in the dark. Grindhouse cinema would later become a major influence on filmmakers such as Rob Zombie and Eli Roth, and is the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino and Robert RodriguezÆs film, the imaginatively titled GRINDHOUSE û an ode to these lurid exploitation flicks. Fun for the dedicated fan, tedious for the rest of us.
A lot of people like this stuff and I thought I'd try Volume 1 before committing myself to further volumes (they're up to Volume 3 at the moment), but I don't think I'll be bothering with any others. In fact, I can't see myself ever watching this volume more than once. To be honest, I couldn't even watch all of it as I got so bored. The compilation is well put together, with the trailers themselves looking the best they've ever done for home video, and the people at Nucleus Films are to be commended for archiving so much exploitational promotion in one place, but there's only so much cheap, naff, sadistic or misogynistic material I can bear. Attitudes have definitely changed, most of us have grown up, and I didn't find myself laughing at these trailers as apparently many other fans do, drunkenly or otherwise. These movies are outmoded, OTT and distinctly unpleasant. I do not deny that they were a significant part of cinema's sleazier history, but I'll leave their appreciation to others.Read full review
