'Peterloo' a Mike Leigh Film
An engaging portrayal of a major, yet little known, event from British social History. This Film has a good Cast of northern character actors (some being instantly recognisable) including a superb individual performance from Maxine Peake in the role of the principal family 'matriarch' figure. The Lancashire dialect of the period is both engaging & entertaining, & the contrast in costume of the 'haves & have nots' is particularly striking. During the build up to the 'peaceful' massed rally, the viewer will soon become aware just how 'down trodden' the Textile Worker's of Manchester, & its surrounding Cotton Town's really were. It also becomes clear that the authorities did not know how to deal with such a well organised rally. They were convinced that the 'working class were incapable of co ... 'Watch & learn'......You owe it to yourself !

The history and political consequences of an ill judged intervention in a peaceful protest about the lack of democracy in the country 200 years ago.
The dvd worked. It played the film from beginning to end. The menu doesn't work. No extras. I'm wondering if this is a faulty product of if there is no menu with this particular dvd. It was posted immediately, wrapped safely and arrived on time. It was the film I wanted to see. Not 'entertaining' as the topic, the Peterloo Massacre, wasn't meant to be.

Mike Leigh at his very best. Wonderful dialogue, historical accuracy and believable characters. Great acting. Some people may find there is not enough action until the end but if you are interested in this period of history and if you care about the working class struggle for political representation in Britain, then this is the film for you. There is much light relief with a lot of ironic humour. Has a great deal of relevance to modern times, particularly Brexit. Also highlights how badly soldiers were treated after Waterloo (as is the same nowadays, a third of the homeless are ex military).Mike Leigh at his very best. Wonderful dialogue, historical accuracy and believable characters. Great acting. Some people may find there is not enough action until the end but if you are interested in this period of history and if you care about the working class struggle for political representation in Britain, then this is the film for you. Great film!
Terrific film. Mile Leigh's films are always good. This one is fascinating historically, showing how our democracy had to be fought for long and hard through the 19th century. It was only in 1928 that every adult had the vote, some 109 years later! I thoroughly recommend this film.

There is a genuine attempt at authenticity and explaining historical context but I think at the expense of credible characterisation and engaging narrative. Feels clunky in parts and wooden. Pace too slow and lots of small scenes that don’t add value. By the time we got to the massacre I was relieved as I knew it was nearing its lengthy end. Shame really as I was hugely looking forward to its release and am teaching it at a secondary school too.There is a genuine attempt at authenticity and explaining historical context but I think at the expense of credible characterisation and engaging narrative.
