Ambientato nel rione popolare di Santa Croce a Firenze negli anni intorno al 1935, "Il Quartiere" coglie un gruppo di ragazzi e ragazze nel passaggio dall'adolescenza alla prima giovinezza e ne racconta le vicende d'amore e d'amicizia. I protagonisti, nell'intreccio di affetti che li unisce, sono posti tutti sullo stesso piano, senza che l'esperienza di nessuno di essi venga mai privilegiata: ne risulta un vero e proprio romanzo corale in cui Pratolini fonde il memorialismo e il tono lirico e intimistico delle sue prime opere con un interesse più prettamente civile, perfino politico (il libro venne scritto nel 1943-44, quando l'autore prendeva parte attiva alla Resistenza), per approdare a una dimensione narrativa più ampia.
