  • Most favourable review

An interesting thriller and critique on the morals of Edwardian Britain.

I had seen this film before on TV and purchased this to help my granddaughter with her GCSE studies. It still holds one's interest and is far superior to the later remake; mind you Alastair Sim is mostly to thank for that.

  • GRIPPING PLOT

Beautifully crafted interpretation of Priestley's work. Strong well selected cast and absorbing plot showing human hypocrisy and selfish disregard of those less fortunate. The black and white production adds to the mystery and suspense. The ending is contains a powerful twist, to which the audience draws an inevitable conclusion.

  • Interestingly different.

First time I had seen this version. Interesting deviations from the book but an entertaining watch. Strong cast I would have this alongside the newer version with Ken Stott as both are very watchable.

  • Brilliant film version of great play

The play by J B Priestly is probably his best. It has a deep social message that we are all involved in each other's (mis)fortunes, and is aimed at smug middle classes. Despite its age, it still appeals to modern audiences. This film version is a masterly production starring Alastair Sim whose portrayal of the inspector is breathtakingly sinister and witty. An enjoyable experience which leaves you thinking.
