  • 20th Century Fox classic in glorious black and white!

    This movie from 1951 zips along from it's Belsen beginning to the titular San Francisco house finale. The San Fran location shots are a highlight as are the vintage visual effects by Fred Sersen. Valentina Cortese - still with us and in her 90s, is believable as the woman with the stolen identity and she is matched by Richard Basehart, the pair were to marry the same year. I also enjoyed Fay Baker's Mrs. Danvers like turn as the icy governess to the boy, Gordon Gebert in his usual lively form. While there is much to admire, the film does not really live up to it's initial premise and descends into a will he or will he not kill her, as in Suspicion. Robert Wise was ok, but no Hitchcock, who would of surely achieved more with the material. Still, it's worth watching if you are a fan of ...
