    A FUNNY, GRUBBY MUSICAL WESTERN

I have always loved this musical despite it receiving fairly negative reviews upon cinematic release in 1969. It could be called an 'anti-musical', as the two male leads cannot sing; but I feel this adds charm, reveals more of their characters; and therefore creates an empathy with the audience. Harve Presnall as 'Rotten Luck Willy' is tremendous (what a voice), and the all-male chorus is sublime. Highlight of the movie: the 'Maria' sequence. It is one of the best performed songs ever featured in an American film musical.

  • Most critical review

a great all round musical with great cast.

absolutely brilliant. good storyline, well acted. the singing of clint eastwood and lee marvin should,nt really work but it works perfectly. a great musical score throughout the film with stunning scenery. what,s not to like? a really feel good film.

  • A brilliant comedy western

I may be getting older and apt to bask in nostalgia but I also feel that the old adage the olduns are the best is sometimes true. Take British sitcoms of the seventies like Faulty Towers, Dads Army etc . They have never bettered those and they are still classics that stand up to be entertaining decades later. Same is true of a good film. At first the idea of a musical comedy western seems strange but this film is very watchable predominantly due to the brilliant performance of Lee Marvin. The rest of the cast are just window dressing really and there is one absolutely awful performance by some bloke playing an English or Scots person but his accent is so bad and so annoying its hard to tell what his character is supposed to be. God knows where the accent coach was on this film. All that ...

  • Excellent old musical

Excellent old musical with excellent performances from all the cast, notably, the late great Lee Marvin who takes on the role of a grumpy old gold prospector with a gruff but likeable voice. Some great songs as well as a good storyline.

  • Having a really good time.

It is bit long, it is a bit dated, but bye Jove it is very entertaining and very nostalgic. A really good film that takes you back to when they made really good films. Yes I rate this film.
