Most people will not have to do this as the provided 'bar' will be perfectly adequate at getting the ground spike to screw into the soil. I used some oil to deter rusting. It is plated steel and well made. If you don't get it perfectly straight, fear not. The 3 top screws and brackets (provided) will allow for this. For the money, a great item and easy to use. Recommended.
