      Media overhype as usual.

Firstly, am I the only person on planet earth who actually enjoyed the original Lynch version and still does? The media did their damnedest to assassinate the original film when released, unjustifiably I believe although I accept that it was not without its faults. Was so looking forward to watching this new version especially after all of the hype and although I enjoyed it I am struggling to find where the extra footage has come from to justify a full length feature covering a fraction of the story. Sure there are improvements in video quality & cgi etc but the original is now almost 40 years old and is to be expected. One point in particular that sticks in my mind is that when they leave Caladan for Arrakis in the original we know that the Guild Navigator's fold space to get them there ...

    • Most critical review

      Read the book instead.

Nowhere near as good as the David Lynch version. They've cut out scenes (presumably because it's a very long book) and then added new scenes for no obvious reason. 'Paul' is believable as the age the character should be, but the actor plays him like a sulky kid instead of the extremely intelligent young man of the book. Several characters look alike (all shaggy beard obscuring the face) to the point that I was struggling to be sure who was whom. Kynes is now a woman, for no obvious reason. I have read all the books, but this film couldn't hold my attention. I stopped watching as the betrayal was about to happen. I may go back to it if I get really stuck for something to do.

    • Dune, Part One

This is the third version of Dune that I've seen. One thing that appears nowhere on the DVD case, or the features, is that this is Part One, so I was a little disappointed that it was not the entire film, but stopped half-way through. Otherwise excellent.

    • The closest Dune film yet - roll on part two!

There has been a lot of 'discussion' on the net since the arrival of this, the third version of Frank Herbert's Dune novel. I have always liked the first film with its great special effects way before the arrival of the all powerful cgi and this new film takes those cgi effects to new heights. The sandworms and ornithopters are really true to the book and the characters are played beautifully. There is only one thing that disappointed me - the woke/feminist brigade have unfortunately got their claws into the production and Dr. Liet Kynes has suddenly switched sex and become a woman! Ok, the actress who plays the part is great and the book never really goes into Kynes ethnicity but it definitely does say that Kynes was Chani's FATHER not MOTHER! Why create a masterpiece so close to the ...

    • Visually stunning, but left a few holes.

An enjoyable rendition of the first part of Frank Herbert's epic Sci-Fi classic. The characters are well developed and the key components are there, but there were a few key moments missing, so in the context of the story the Sci-Fi channel's rendition (which essentially covers the first three books) is better. I will be looking to part two to see how this rendition unpacks the monumental changes of the conclusion to the first novel.
