About this product

Product Information

E.M. Forster is best known for his exquisite novels, but these two affecting short stories brilliantly combine the fantastical with the allegorical. In 'The Machine Stops', humanity has isolated itself beneath the ground, enmeshed in automated comforts, and in 'The Celestial Omnibus' a young boy takes a trip his parents believe impossible.

Sorry for "rating the item" at 3*, but I have not yet read this book. eBay's new policy does not allow feedback without star rating and review for the product, so I leave 3* for any book not yet read. eBay trashed their reviews (to which I had contributed) and think this a substitute, but we now have a "system" that want an instant, uneditable review. The book arrived very quickly, is new as described, and I am more than happy with my purchase. Many thanks.

  • Most favourable review

Small and compact, a short story for a short journey.

One of my most favourite stories of all times, written by one of my most favourite authors, I rate this classic highly as an addition to everyone's book collection.

  • Most critical review

I was disappointed and thought it a bit of a let-down

Expecting this sci-fiction to be interestingly prophetic, I found it wasn't really worth ploughing through its weirdness. It seemed as if a very depressed Author wrote it, who had in his mind a darkly pessimistic view of humanity. The whole storyline was like recounting the world of a 'manic depressive'. HG Wells did it far better than this. At least this book was cheap and I struggled with it until half way through the second story and gave up. I hope, when I dump it in the book-bank it will be useful for a reader with more patience than me!

  • An essential, thought provoking read .

A brilliant, captivating story, written in 1909 and yet so relevant today, especially during our lock-down lifestyle. A story which will remain with me for a long time, possibly for all time.
