  • An overlooked movie from the early 60s and a good value for those who like unusual unusual, persoanl movies.

This movie is an overlooked film from director Robert Wise. made prior to The Sound of Music and after The Haunting, it is, basically, a two character study of very unhappy people. Shot in terrific wide-screen black and white in a grimy New York, it is not a barrel of laughs. The performances are wonderful, with Robert Mitchum actually able to bring Shirley MacLaine’s performance down to something resembling a human being. The cinematography tries to break the property out of it’s two characters on stage format and almost succeeds. The jazz score is one of Andre Previn’s best. Though not a film for everyone, it is a movie that deserves attention.
