Disassembly and removal showed old gauge and associated pressure tube from boiler heavily contaminated with water/scale/grinds. Removed, cleaned and flushed pressure tube and gauge. Maybe after cleaning that old gauge was working again but without any sensible way to check it, I swapped in the new gauge before coffee machine re-assembly. New gauge working OK.
