The Cambria County Johnstown War Memorial Invitational Basketball Tournament began in 1949 and ran for forty-six years. It pitted local teams against the best in Pennsylvania and eight surrounding states and grew to elite status. Hall of Fame coach Morgan Wootten's DeMatha Catholic committed in 1961. The Stags participated in ten tournaments, winning eight. Bob Hurley's St. Anthony's, Power Memorial Academy, Baltimore Dunbar, Simon Gratz and many other epic programs played here. National players of the year wowed the locals, from Wilt Chamberlain to Gene Banks, Reggie Williams, Billy Thompson, Tom McMillen and Rasheed Wallace. Bradley A. Huebner captures the stories from the forty-six-year tournament that was conceived and run by imaginative Johnstown business leaders., Amid a series of three destructive floods that pounded little Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in less than a century, Cambria County residents somehow maintained their lofty expectations and big-picture foresight to begin what would become the oldest Christmas high school basketball tournament in the nation, as they would boast.
