A good chunky book that will at least take time to read, and it was purchased as recommended for its insights into early psychologists, who were called Alienists at their recognised inception, and how they influenced the prison sentences given to two rather unpleasant upper class young men who killed a younger fellow student purely for kicks in a Nietzschen attempt at becoming superhuman and operating outside of the realms of decency in the pursuit of self-serving pleasure. However, it suffers from the passage of time greatly. Homosexuality was illegal and viewed as a perversion, therefore the relationship between the two young killers has not been explored fully, and the murderous act itself even less so. There was almost certainly sexual interference with their victim, only vaguely ... There was almost certainly sexual interference with their victim, only vaguely hinted at here due to the constraints of the timeframe in which the book was written. The book apparently would connect the modern reader with the mindset of serial killers who kill as an outsider statement of true freedom from societal constraints, in particular Ian Brady of the infamous Moors murders. It does not do this; only Brady's own book, The Gates of Janus, will give us that, and even that is guarded. The book here is beautifully written, with dreamy idiology of bromance and courtship of young ladies in the days when a kiss was considered risque, but the reader may find him/herself searching for an earthy and disturbing honesty which this book cannot deliver. This is not a book for those who are interested in grim and salacious details, but more of an introduction to early modern psychology. The young killers, Leopold and Loeb, were spared the hangman's noose, thanks to the efforts of one particular Alienist/psychologist, but it is clear that neither appreciated being 'saved', much like Ian Brady for whom annihilation/death of the self and the retaining of secrets (the whereabouts of Keith Bennett) was everything. The book is added to my collection as is its rightful place, but little if anything was gleaned from it, except a private enjoyment in the rather endearing old-fashionedness of it all.
