The plastic is thicker than most, not easily punctured. The snap activator is encased inside a plastic piece that dulls the sharp edges and prevents punctures. I love that! And the heat? Ohhhh yes! Hot, gently radiating and just where I need it on my back! I love it!! When I am not using it for my back I will be putting it on my reborn baby so he will feel like a real baby.
