About this product

Product Information

How does a government steal a child and then imprison him? How does it keep it a secret? This story is how. At the age of seventeen, after a childhood in a fostered family followed by six years in care homes, Norman Greenwood was given his birth certificate. He learned that his real name was not Norman. It was Lemn Sissay. He was British and Ethiopian. And he learned that his mother had been pleading for his safe return to her since his birth. Here Sissay recounts his life story. It is a story of neglect and determination. Misfortune and hope. Cruelty and triumph. Sissay reflects on a childhood in care, self-expression and Britishness, and in doing so explores the institutional care system, race, family and the meaning of home. Written with all the lyricism and power you would expect from one of the nation's best-loved poets, this moving, frank and timely memoir is the result of a life spent asking questions, and a celebration of the redemptive power of creativity.

    Social services UK

Book clean, good price. Story is an eye-opener on social services in the past. There are also sections about racism some of which was unintended and some very much deliberate. The author has led a difficult life but overcame obstacles. Although an uncomfortable read, our book club rated it 9/10.

  • Amazing life story

Great true and honest read. A definetly triumph over adversity. This man is a great advocate for those living in the care system.

  • My name is Why

Absolutely brilliant book. A real eye opener to the sad plight of children caught up in the care system. Heartbreaking at times. I’m really hoping & praying that Lemn has found his Mother by now.

  • My name is why...... really makes a change. I have given up reading crime novels, as I see them to be a negative influence in general.

An honest type of book, which I will save to re-read.

  • Amazing autobiography.

This extraordinary true story is Lemn Sissay's account of how he survived the gruesome British Care system as a child.
