About this product

Product Information

With the moral stamina and intellectual pose of a twentieth-century Titan, this slightly built, duitful, unassuming chemist set out systematically to remember the German hell on earth, steadfastly to think it through, and then to render it comprehensible in lucid, unpretentious prose. He was profoundly in touch with the minutest workings of the most endearing human events and with the most contempible. What has survived in Levi's writing isn't just his memory of the unbearable, but also, in THE PERIODIC TABLE and THE WRENCH, his delight in what made the world exquisite to him. He was himself a magically endearing man, the most delicately forceful enchanter I've ever known - PHILIP ROTH

The book appears to be in excellent condition, the quality looks good, and the value is exceptional 👍. As for the content I’ve only just received it so I haven’t read it yet. 🤔

  • Most favourable review

Compelling, unbiased account of a dreadful moment in history.

A compelling book, not an easy read, to be expected with the nature of the subject, for this very reason though, I think it should be read. There’s so much to say on this subject, but most important is our acknowledgement of what happened and the unimaginable suffering of millions of people. I have since ordered more by Primo Levi, we should all read what he has to say.

  • Most critical review

    Disgusted

I was so excited to read this book but when I received it appeared to be an ex library book which had notes and highlighted sections throughout. I’m all for re using books, which I think it’s a great idea but don’t list as a book with a ‘very good’ condition if the amount of notes in the book is disruptive to the actual read. Furthermore the water damage is of an extent that the pages simply fall out while turning. Very disappointed- this would of been no stars if that was an option.

  • Fine, good choice.

Good - simple to read, basic format and comfortable size. The experiences are awfully gripping.

  • A horrible truth that shows that humans can overcome hell

This book tells the awful story of being in Aushwitz, by an inmate who survived. It is at times difficult to read, but should be read by all teenagers, so that we do not allow such treatment of one human to another ever takes place again

  • Great book about a terrible time in history.

I had been wary of reading a book about such a harrowing subject but Primo Levi is an exceptional writer and turns his terrible experience into an immensely readable book.
